CAAS’ S$9 Million Aviation Manpower Programme Announced

The initiative will be an integral part of CAAS’ efforts to attract, develop and retain talent and manpower for the Singapore aviation industry

18 November 2010, Singapore - To bolster human resource development efforts for the aviation industry in Singapore, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) will launch the Aviation Manpower Programme (AMP) with a budget of S$9 million for the period from 1 December 2010 to 31 March 2015. The AMP is the third programme under the S$100 million Aviation Development Fund (ADF), which was launched on 1 April 2010 to promote and develop the aviation sector in Singapore.

The launch of the AMP was announced by Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Finance and Transport, today at the opening ceremony of the inaugural Aviation Open House spearheaded by CAAS.

Building the talent pool and manpower base for the aviation industry

Built on the thrust of “Enabling People”, the AMP will comprise initiatives that aim toattracttalent to and build the manpower base for the aviation industry,developand upgrade the aviation talent pool and workforce, as well asretaintalent and manpower within the aviation industry, beginning with the three key sectors of aerospace, air transport and air cargo & logistics.

Under the AMP, CAAS will roll out a series of programmes and incentives aimed at positioning and promoting the aviation industry as a compelling career choice, building a quality workforce that meets the demands of the global aviation market, and developing talent for management and specialised professional positions in the aviation industry. CAAS will work closely with the industry and training institutions to develop and implement the initiatives. These will include providing scholarships for young talent such as polytechnic students, undergraduates and postgraduates, providing funding for skills upgrading and executive development programmes as well as organising student outreach activities.

Mr Yap Ong Heng, Director-General of CAAS, said, “CAAS recognises the importance of building a quality and productive workforce to bring the aviation industry to the next level. The Aviation Manpower Programme will give an added boost, complementing the various Singapore Government efforts, to attracting, developing and retaining the human resource required by the industry for its further growth.”

About Aviation Open House

The inaugural Aviation Open House (AOH) held at the Singapore Aviation Academy from 18 to 19 November 2010, is the start of multi-pronged efforts to showcase the aviation industry and its many career opportunities to students and job-seekers. The 2-day event includes industry and career talks, company exhibitions and site visits to aviation companies.

More than 30 aviation organisations including airlines, air cargo and logistics, aerospace engineering, airport management and service companies, as well as government agencies are participating in the AOH.

More than 1,600 students from the Institute of Technical Education, polytechnics and universities will have the exclusive opportunity to learn more about aviation through this unique programme.
