Our history
Learn about CAAS' rich heritage, starting from 1980s.
CAAS was set up on 1 September 1984, and is responsible for developing Singapore into an international aviation hub.
Prior to CAAS' establishment, civil aviation responsibilities were carried out by the Department of Civil Aviation. With the development and growth of the aviation industry, especially with the opening of Changi Airport in 1981, it became clear to the government that the department had to be reorganised as a statutory board in order to manage the airport effectively, respond more quickly to changes in the aviation industry, and maintain and raise the standard of Singapore’s aviation sector.
Changi Airport was under the management of CAAS until 1 July 2009 when CAAS was restructured, and the operations of Changi Airport were corporatised.
