Learn about the requirements and application process to obtain a Flying Instructor rating.
Who can apply for a Flying Instructor rating
Singapore pilot licence holders intending to conduct training that leads to the grant of a Singapore pilot licence or rating can apply.
There are 2 types of Flying Instructor (FI) rating:
FI rating (single-pilot) for giving flying instruction in single-pilot aircraft, limited to the aircraft types specified on your rating.
FI rating (multi-crew) for giving flying instruction in multi-crew aircraft, limited to the aircraft type specified on your rating.
Application process
How to qualify
To qualify, you must meet the applicable criteria under Singapore Air Safety Publication (SASP) Part 3 Flying Instructor Ratings.
The criteria depend on whether you are applying for an FI for single-pilot or multi-crew aircraft training, and on the aircraft category (i.e. aeroplane or helicopter).

When to apply
Apply before you begin giving flying instruction that leads to a Singapore flight crew licence.
What are the required documents
The required documents are listed in Singapore Air Safety Publication (SASP) Part 3 Flying Instructor Ratings.
They include:
a valid pilot licence
a valid medical certificate
proof you have the required experience or training
a logbook showing completion of the required training and tests
a flight test report
What are the fees
There are no fees to apply for an FI Rating.
What is the processing time
Complete applications take about 7 working days to process. Incomplete applications may take more time.
How to apply
Ensure you qualify, i.e. meet all the criteria under SASP Part 3.
Download and complete the relevant application form(s):
Prepare the required documents listed in the application form(s).
Submit the completed application form(s) along with the required documents to CAAS_PEL_FCL@caas.gov.sg.
Application for FI Rating
What is the validity period
The validity period is stated on your FI Rating.

FI rating (multi-crew) | 24 months |
To renew your FI rating, you must:
meet the criteria for renewal (e.g. complete the required refresher training and flight test)
submit your renewal at least 1 week before the end of the validity period
You can also reactivate a lapsed FI rating.

What are the conditions
Holders of an FI Rating have ongoing obligations. For instance, you must:
provide instruction only on aircraft types endorsed on your FI rating
continue to comply with SASP Part 3
To instruct additional aircraft types, you must meet the criteria for the additional aircraft type under SASP Part 3 and apply by submitting your application to CAAS_PEL_FCL@caas.gov.sg.
